How to Start with Family History

How To

Family history research requires a combination of patience and persistence.  Searching the internet for information isjust part of the process.  Finding family may be as easy as inserting a name in an on line search engine, but verifying that data can be time consuming.  Successful research is best accomplished by working backwards, one generation at a time, checking original sources such as vital records, census documents and other types of material in addition to internet resources.  Always remember to record where you found the data so that you can find it again.  Family history is fun and the internet makes it so easy to get started.  I have done my own family tree and can still remember how confusing it all was in the beginning, listening to abbreviations such as ‘GRO’, ‘IGI’, ‘BMD’, ‘GEDCOM’ and many more abbreviations which I had no idea of their meanings.  I found it difficult finding support and guidance on how and where to start.  Here at DWS-Training I run family history courses, being there as a support and to help guide you through the first baby steps.  Before you know it you’ll be trawling through websites like a professional.
